Introduction

Modern armed forces across the globe are rapidly adopting digital training and computer-based technologies to enhance operational readiness, reduce costs, and provide scalable learning solutions. In India, this digital transformation is gaining momentum, and organizations like Code and Pixels Interactive Technologies Pvt. Ltd. play a crucial role in supporting this shift. As a leading provider of IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals) and e-learning solutions, Code and Pixels has established itself as a reliable partner for defence organizations. This essay explores how Code and Pixels can help the armed forces in implementing computer-based technology for training, maintenance, and operational excellence.

2. Understanding the Role of Code and Pixels

Code and Pixels specialize in:

Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs): Digital, interactive manuals that replace bulky paper-based technical books, making it easier for defence personnel to access, understand, and maintain complex equipment.

E-Learning and CBT Solutions: Customized computer-based training modules that provide immersive learning experiences.

Simulations and Multimedia Content: Visual and interactive content to train personnel in handling equipment, operating systems, and responding to combat situations.

By leveraging these tools, Code and Pixels supports the armed forces in digitizing training, enhancing efficiency, and standardizing knowledge dissemination.

3. How Code and Pixels Can Help Armed Forces

3.1 Implementation of IETMs for Technical Training
Armed forces use highly sophisticated equipment such as submarines, aircraft, radar systems, and missiles.

Maintaining and operating this equipment requires precise technical knowledge. Code and Pixels’ IETMs allow soldiers and technicians to:

Quickly search and access technical information.

View step-by-step troubleshooting processes.

Use multimedia support (images, animations, videos) for better understanding.
This reduces errors, saves time, and ensures equipment is operated safely and effectively.

3.2 Computer-Based Training (CBT) for Skill Development
Code and Pixels develop CBT software that enables soldiers to train on:

Operating new systems and equipment.

Learning safety protocols and standard operating procedures.

Practicing in simulated environments without risking lives or equipment. These modules can be accessed on desktops, laptops, or even mobile devices, making them flexible and scalable.

3.3 Standardization of Training Across Units
In a large force like India’s, training consistency is critical. Traditional classroom training may vary depending on the instructor. CBT modules developed by Code and Pixels ensure uniformity, so whether a soldier trains in a metropolitan base or a remote border outpost, the quality of training remains the same.

3.4 Simulation-Based Learning
By using animations, 3D models, and interactive graphics, Code and Pixels can simulate battlefield conditions, equipment handling, or emergency procedures. This immersive learning helps soldiers practice responses to real-world situations without the risks and costs of live exercises.

3.5 Continuous Updates and Upgradation
With defence technology evolving constantly, training materials must be updated quickly. Unlike printed manuals, Code and Pixels’ digital platforms allow easy updates, ensuring that soldiers always train with the latest knowledge.

3.6 Cost-Effective and Scalable Solutions
Traditional training methods require physical classrooms, instructors, and repeated workshops. Code and Pixels’ digital solutions are cost-effective, as once a module is developed, it can be reused indefinitely and deployed across thousands of personnel with minimal extra cost.

3.7 Supporting Self-Paced Learning
Not all soldiers learn at the same speed. CBT allows individuals to learn at their own pace, repeat modules as needed, and test themselves through quizzes and assessments. This personalized approach builds confidence and ensures better retention of knowledge.

3.8 Enhancing Operational Readiness
By implementing Code and Pixels’ solutions, armed forces can ensure that personnel are always mission-ready. Quick access to digital manuals, continuous CBT, and standardized learning reduce downtime, improve efficiency, and prepare soldiers for both routine operations and combat scenarios.

4. Indian Context: Why Code and Pixels Matters

India has one of the largest defence forces in the world. Given the diversity in terrain, operations, and deployment, uniform and efficient training is a challenge. Code and Pixels, being one of the top IETM and CBT providers in India, has already partnered with various defence units, delivering high-quality digital training solutions.

By supporting India’s vision of Digital Armed Forces, Code and Pixels is helping bridge the gap between traditional training and modern requirements. Its solutions align with Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) by providing indigenous, customized software rather than relying on foreign technologies.

5. Conclusion

The adoption of computer-based technologies is no longer optional for armed forces—it is essential for staying prepared in a rapidly changing defense landscape. Code and Pixels, with its expertise in IETMs, CBT, and digital learning solutions, is uniquely positioned to support this transformation.

By offering flexible, cost-effective, scalable, and interactive training systems, Code and Pixels ensures that India’s armed forces can continuously upskill, operate sophisticated equipment confidently, and maintain peak operational readiness. In the long run, partnerships with companies like Code and Pixels will be vital in building a modern, digitally empowered defence ecosystem for India.

What are the details required to make CBT**

Before starting CBT, OEM must finalize the duration of CBT. In some military RFP/SCOPE duration of CBT is mentioned along with the duration of each topic, subtopic, and sub–sub-topic.

If that is not mentioned then OEM has to make a Table of content first and mention the approximate time to cover each topic, subtopic, and sub–sub-topic.

It is called CCID, or course content Identified document. It is basically a full detailed Table of content and duration.

Once the CCID document is ready then, the Vendor will collect raw content and make a DCID document.

Which means a Detailed Course content document. It can also be called a storyboard. This storyboard will have complete content for every topic, subtopic, and sub–sub-topic.

Also, this document will contain the presentation methodology. It means is this particular sub-topic is being covered as Video, or Image, Text or animation if animation, 2d or 3d, etc.

Based on the number of words we can arrive at a number of hours.

If the number of hours is more than deliverable, we can concisely edit or delete unwanted text.

Once the DCDD is approved by end-user/ Army then we can start production of CBT.

Content Development Approach

Step -1 Shell/ Prototype/Template Design

The first step in the creation of the CBT is to design the functional prototype, branding, skinning i.e., the template of the course. This will be developed based on inputs like target audience, their skill/education level, nature of topics, other navigation facilities like

and prototype/ functional shell will be sent to the client for review and approval.

Step -2 Development of Design Documents

Based on the inputs provided by Subject Matter Experts (SME), a team of Instructional Designers will prepare a Table of Content / Course content identification Document and Storyboard/ Script/ Detailed Content Design Document consisting of the text that will appear on the screen. The corresponding text for voice-over, graphic design instruction will also be provided. Instructional Designers will interact closely with the SME and obtain the inputs, grasp the concepts, reproduce them as content, and finally get it reviewed by the SME/ Client.

The storyboard will be checked for technical, typographical, and grammatical errors. Checks will also be done to ensure that the content matches the requirements specified by the client. Errors found will be rectified and the final content will be sent to the client for approval and sign-off.

Our instructional designers develop design documents as per the guidelines of principles of adult learning, Instructional Design Taxonomies such as Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy, Dick and Carey Model, Kemp's Instructional Design Model, Gagné's 9 Events of Instruction, Kirkpatrick's 4 Levels of Training Evaluation

Step -3 Approval of Design Documents

The client will review the Design Document, and pass back the reviewed document with Comments, suggestions if any

Step -4 Content/ Media/ Assets/ Development and Authoring

After the necessary Corrective Actions are implemented, the multimedia team will put together the approved template and the contents to create the complete version of the e-Learning course. Based on the storyboard, graphics and animations will be included at the appropriate locations to enhance the learner’s understanding of the points being discussed. Voice-over will be recorded as necessary, and the graphics and animations created will be synchronized with the text.

This developed version will pass through a series of stringent quality checks sent to the client for review and approval. This version is called Alpha Version

Sep -5 Beta Version

The client will review the Alpha version and pass back the reviewed content with comments, suggestions, etc. for corrections if any. Once these corrections are fixed by the Development team then once again the corrected Final version will be submitted to the client along with relevant approval documents

Putting the Code and Pixels Content Development Life Cycle (CDLC) in a simple way:

Phase 3 – Post Project Support

In addition to providing superior E-content, we provide Post Project Support to the client. We conduct feedback analysis sessions from different actual users and collect user feedback on the project/ content so that we can augment the content next time. The best way to improve the usability of the content is to address the critics of the content.

LEVELS OF CBT

Level 1. Passive-no interaction

This level is what is commonly referred to as ‘page-turners'. The course is linear and could be considered basic training, in which the student acts only as an information receiver.

Basically, the sequence of screens is fixed and the student can not choose the order in which you want to see the content, return to a previous topic or browse freely. However, it can be effective for communicating simple concepts

At this level learners do not interact with resources, they just have:

Graphics, images

Rollovers

Basic quiz questions

Some refer to level 1 e-learning as the “click next” style of e-learning. It has very low amounts of interactivity (i.e., clicking the Next button is as interactive as it typically gets) and there is a lot of static text and images.

Level 1 quizzes are usually basic multiple-choice and true-or-false questions. Level 1 e-learning, while basic, does have its place: it can be a quick and inexpensive way to cover simple rules or procedures.

These types of courses or CBTs are used for classroom teaching

No Or very minimal Voice over is used

Power point-based course development

Level 2. Limited interaction

In this case, the course continues to be basic, but the student has more control over their training; they can do more than just watch, read and navigate. This level is used for non-complex operations and maintenance lessons.

At level 2, e-learning courses start to have multimedia. Courses at this level typically contain some audio and video, as well as some basic animations and transitions. This level of content is also often accompanied by narration and activities such as “click and reveal” interactions.

Typical level 2 quizzes are drag-and-drops and matching activities.

Level 2 e-learning is often used because it’s a nice middle ground that offers a richer experience for the learner

At this level, learners interact with resources such as:

Clickable animated graphics

Navigation expands to menus, glossaries, and links to external resources.

Often includes simple exercises (i.e. drag-and-drop, matching, and identification components). Audio and video.

This level is best for courses that are intended to support on-the-job-performance or when importance is more on the skill development

(Software simulations using Demo, Practice, Perform/Hands-on) , video documentaries real-life scenarios, etc.

This level is a favorite in the industry mainly because it optimized the balance between active learning and development time.

Level 3. - 3d, Character animations or high-level Technical Animations

This level gives the highest degree of interaction by the student.

The course includes simulations and the contents are transmitted through the use of educational games to keep the student motivated.

Basically involves all of the elements of levels 1, 2, and recharged interactivity; and greater levels of sophistication.

As the name indicates, it's a computer-based training. It means using a computer, giving training to personnel on equipment, software, systems, or machinery, etc.

Computer-Based Training (CBT) refers to any type of educational or instructional program delivered via a computer. It often utilises multimedia elements such as text, graphics, audio, and video to facilitate learning. CBT can be self-paced, allowing learners to progress at their own speed, or it may be structured with specific timelines and assessments.

Technical Specifications of any standard CBT / SCOPE of CBT

What is expected from Computer-Based Training CBT?

The purpose of CBT is to give as much knowledge as possible before the user touches the actual system. Theoretically user must have ample knowledge before handling or hands-on, i.e. Introduction about the system, Technical specification, Deployment, Assembly, disassembly, Operation, Maintenance and troubleshooting.

When the user attains excellent knowledge about the system theoretically, use can grasp the practicality of the system very easily. CBT gives a strong foundation to the user.

CBT will be used in training the theory to personnel or even as a self-learning tool. This is called blended learning.

The developed Computer-Based Training (CBT) will allow technical personnel to comprehend the description, operation, working principles, parts and parts locations, warnings and cautions, as well as maintenance procedures for systems, all from the classroom, eliminating the need for on-site visits to the actual machinery, assembly area.

The CBT will be developed as a single package consisting of 3 main components.

Description & Operation (D&O) CBT

Maintenance (MNT) CBT

Symptoms Fault Correlation (SFC)

The Description & Operation (D&O) section of the CBT will include information on systems, working principles, the location of Parts/LRUs, electrical power supply and signal flow, indications, and warnings, providing a comprehensive understanding of the systems.

This section will also feature question banks for quizzes (organised by system/module) to help trainees review and assess their learning.

The Maintenance section of the CBT will be developed based on the procedures outlined in (1) the System Maintenance Manual - Scheduled, (2) the Maintenance Manual - Unscheduled, (3) the Engine Maintenance Manual, (4) Calendar-Based Inspection/Servicing, (5) Hourly-Based Inspection/Servicing, (6) Out-of-Phase Inspection/Servicing, and (7) relevant portions of Vendor Manuals.

Symptoms Fault Correlation (SFC) : This will serve as a training aid for providing theoretical instruction to technical personnel on troubleshooting procedures for systems.

Having said this, there is no rule that every CBT must have these sections. Based on the nature of the system, modules and submodules may vary.

General Characteristics of Computer-Based Tutor/Training

The CBT will be user-friendly, browser-independent, and compatible with the latest and future versions of all current browsers for the relevant operating systems.

CBT will include text, labelled images and line diagrams, video clips, 2D and 3D animations, 360-degree views of LRUs/systems, cross-sectional views, exploded views, and high-quality computer-generated audio as necessary. This will ensure that the training package is both self-explanatory and interactive.

High-quality voiceovers in both male and female voices (in English) will be provided for the text, videos, and 2D and 3D animations.

Text content, along with synchronised 2D and 3D animations, video clips, and images, will be presented side by side in the CBT slides for easy reference.

Delivery of Computer-Based Training CBT India:

CBT is usually delivered on DVDs or a USB drive. CBT has password protection to access the contents.

Till 2016, CBTs used to be delivered in Exe format. Windows can play EXE very well. Due to the advancement of technology and the availability of mobile devices, CBTs were also needed to play on Mobile devices. EXE files can not be played on mobile; hence, the HTML5 format was introduced.

This has become web-based Tutor or E-learning, e-content development, etc.

Corporates and other industries call this e-learning, but the Defence calls this Computer-Based Tutor only.

The reason may be, mobile devices aren’t allowed to be used, hence no mobile learning is expected. It’s all Computers.

Still, in a few places, Training and training material is used through Mobiles, Tablets etc, hence, it's always advisable to develop CBT in HTML5 only.

HTML5 makes sure that the course fits any type and size of screen, device. It is called responsive courses.

Responsive design is a course development strategy that enables a CBT to adapt to various screen sizes and devices, providing a consistent and optimal user experience across all platforms.

This approach utilises flexible grids, layouts, images, and CSS media queries to modify the CBT/course appearance and functionality based on the user's device, whether it’s a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

What are the Applications of CBT?

The ARMY, Navy and Air Force use a lot of machinery, systems, hence personnel constantly need training. Training will be physical or hands-on.

Physical and hands-on training is an effective way of training, but it is costly and requires the physical presence of subject matter experts.

The Army, Navy and Air Force have multiple training centres to train the personnel, hence an expert subject matter expert of OEM can not be available at all the places.

Hence, Subject matter experts from OEM and CBT experts jointly develop a training package, which is called the Computer-based Tutor. This training package is distributed to all the training centres

CBT has a vital role in modernising military training by making it more efficient, effective, and adaptable. By harnessing the power of technology, defence organisations can ensure that their personnel are well-prepared for the complexities of contemporary warfare and rapidly changing operational environments. This ultimately contributes to enhanced national security and mission success.

Computer-based Training Computer-based Tutor (CBT) or Computer-based Instructions (CBI) are synonymous words used for multimedia tutors.

CBT word was used till 2010. After that, it's called eLearning or content development, etc. This CBT word is basically used for the defense domain in India.

CBT is a computer-based training developed using various multimedia tools to create graphics, image editing, animation 2d/3d, and videos, etc.

As per the deliverable, every vehicle, system subsystem, or any physical component which is being delivered to Defence needs Training Aids.

A computer-based Tutor is one of the training aid delivered along with the actual physical component.

This tutor covers system overview, introduction, subsystems or various parts/components used, assembly, disassembly, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, replacing of LRUs if any, etc.

The topics may be increased or decreased based on the system.

Its completely decided by OEM, about the depth to be covered and the length to be covered. Generally, each CBT for a small system has 4 hours of duration and bigger systems will have 100 hours or more. (As per our 20 years experience)

Few OEMs do not want to cover a few topics as a security measure or for intellectual value.

CBT (Computer-Based Training) and eLearning Explained In short, imagine studying with a clever robot instructor who adapts to the way you learn and uses useful resources such as animations, games, and simulations. That’s how CBT works! It is an innovative way of learning that follows computers instead of books and lectures.

CBT started in the 1960s when the first automated education programs were launched. CBT has grown in combination with innovations in technology, embracing adaptive learning, multimedia, and interactions. CBT differs from eLearning, an additional term that covers multiple digital learning techniques. CBT focuses on training delivered using computer-based learning.

What is CBT?

Instead of lengthy textbooks and long classes, CBT teaches you to use computers and the internet. Consider interactive activities, entertaining films, exciting tests, and tasks that seem like challenges rather than jobs. You learn at your speed, and at any time, anywhere!

Understanding Computer-Based Training (CBT):

CBT, or computer-based training, is a dynamic method of education that uses digital technology to offer learning materials. When compared to traditional schools, CBT utilizes computer technology to help with learning, providing students with a more adaptive and dynamic learning environment. This technique combines a diverse set of teaching tools, including interactive modules, visuals, exercises, and tests.

The Difference Between eLearning and CBT:

Even though CBT and eLearning are commonly used simultaneously, it is important to understand the primary differences between them. Digital learning, or eLearning, is a more general term that covers CBT and other digital learning methods. Computer-based training (CBT), on the other hand, is training that is specifically delivered using computer-based tools. CBT is simply an extension of eLearning, with a particular focus on computer-based training.

How eLearning is different from Computer-based Learning?

eLearning is a broad term that covers all forms of digital learning, including CBT. However, CBT is unique in that everything takes place on a computer, such as a specific app or website. Consider it eLearning’s skilled in technology!

Where can you access CBT?

It is used by businesses to teach employees, hospitals to educate physicians and nurses, schools to make classes more engaging, and even the military for realistic training simulations. With CBT, the future of learning looks even brighter! Consider machine learning that adapts to your learning style, computer simulations where you can practice skills in real time, and bite-sized learning modules that fit into your busy daily life.

This will be developed based on inputs like target audience, their skill/education level, nature of topics, other navigation facilities like

play and Pause

and prototype/ functional shell will be sent to the client for review and approval.

Step -6 Gold version

Code and Pixels Content Development Life Cycle (CDLC)

Putting the Code and Pixels Content Development Life Cycle (CDLC) in a simple way:

Our Project life cycle comprises 3 Phases i.e. Pre-project Analysis, Project Production, Post Project support.

Phase – 1 Pre Project Analysis

Requirement Analysis

Proposals & Quotation

Approval

Phase – 2 Project Production

1) Pre Production:

Detailed client requirement analysis, Collection of raw material, Project Planning

Table of Content/Course Specific Document/Course content Identification Document

Script/Story Board/ Visual Story Board/Detailed Content Design Document

2) Production:

Videography, Photography, Voice Recording

Development of Graphic Assets, Animations, Programming, Integration, Internal QC

3) Post Production:

Quality Check and Delivery of Alpha/Beta/Gold Versions

Media Generation / Content Deployment / Delivery

Training to users/ facilitators

For technical courses i.e. Equipment’s/device explanation, walkthrough, 3d views, hands-on practice, software simulations where a High level of interactivity is required to engage users or disseminate knowledge

3D MODELING, 3d Animations, and Video recording, editing shooting comes in level -3
